Guide :: Domain Names
Choosing a domain name
You will find a warehouse's worth of content online offering advice and guidance about choosing a domain name, but to be frank it's not that hard. The difficulty lies in finding one that is actually available!
A good domain name should be 3 things:
1. Easy to remember
2. Easy to type
3. Relevant to your service or brand
Ideally it should also still have the .com, co.uk & .net available to prevent you losing traffic and anyone cyber-squatting on one of the big three domain extensions in the UK.
Domain Name Facts:
» 75% of all domain names registered globally are a .com .uk is the 2nd biggest country specific domain extension with 9m domains registered (Germany is number 1)
» 80% of UK users would choose to visit a .uk website over a .com when presented with a search result.
» When making a purchase, 77% of UK users prefer a .uk website
You will find that a lot of descriptive domain names already have the .com taken and possibly the co.uk as well. An alternative to both options described above is to create a name that could not possibly have been taken and build your brand around that. Existing examples include Ning.com, Meebo.com & Flickr.com.
Tips on choosing a domain name
Keep it short, keep it simple
To find your site people need to be able to remember your address and easily type it into their browser. Aim to register the shortest name that your customers and visitors will associate with your website.
co.uk, com, eu, net, org...?
It is a good idea to register several similar domain names, particularly if you own a trademark for a certain name. If possible register the .co.uk, .com, .eu and .net. These are the most popular domain names and by registering all of them you can help to prevent cyber squatters and losing traffic.
Consider common typos
If you have a domain name that can easily by pluralised or miss-spelled consider registering those as well to stop traffic going elsewhere.
Don't shell out large amounts of money
Some companies still sell domain names for as much as £100 per year. Make sure you are getting a good deal!
