| The Most Important Step To Get RightKeywords or Keyphrases are what a searcher types into the search engine to find what they are looking for, in this step we will discover what keywords are important to your business to attract sales and then how to make sure pages on your website are optimised for them so that they are found in the search engines.
What keywords are my customers using to find products like mine? This is where many businesses fail for one simple reason; they think they know the answer. Whatever you may think don't act on it, it is very important to let the results of the research you are about to undertake make the decisions as to what keywords you are going to target. You need to aim to optimise each page on your website for one keyword and if your website is large enough optimise two pages for one keyword.

| 1. Make a ListTo begin with make a list either on paper or in a program such as excel (whatever you find easiest) of the key pages or sections (depending on how big your website is) on your website in one column.
In the next column list the keywords you think are relative to that page, keep it simple and focas on single words.
For example
I have a website that sells products for dogs, my website was broken up into two main sections leads and collars :
Leads = dog, dogs, puppy, lead, leads, extending, retracting, leather
Collars = dog, dogs, puppy, collar, collars, leather
The simple keywords that you have listed are your stem keywords these are the ones that we will use to create our final list.
| 2. Keyword ResearchYou now need to expand on your keyword list to discover which keyword phrases and combinations your potential customers are using, you can do this using a simple excel file to save your data to and a free tool such as the Google Adwords Keyword Tool
When I enter the example stem keywords into this tool for leads (dog, dogs, puppy, lead, leads, extending, retracting, leather) the tool returns with 150 key words/phrases each with columns detailing advertiser competition, local search volume and global monthly search volume. Download these keywords in .csv for excel format using the link at the bottom of the list and the additional keywords to be considered and then open them up using excel. | 3. Getting the Right KeywordsEssentially what you need to do next is filter through the results using common sense and your knowledge of your business and customers eliminating any keywords/phrases that do not apply which will leave you with a cluster of keywords/phrases.
Fact: If you want to successfully promote your website on the Internet, you have to choose the right keywords. If you target the wrong keywords, your website promotion efforts will be in vain.
For Example Using my stem keywords from step 2 the google keyword tool has come up with 150 results immedietly I can go though and delete anything referencing cats and save products I don't sell in another excel file (the search statistics will help me decide what new products to put on my store) which will cut the list to a quater.
Next I evaluate the remaining in terms of relevance and quality: Keyphrases will drive more quality traffic than single keywords as they are far more targeted so I will save those to a different excel file for later just incase as they may be useful as stem keywords that I did not think of originally or might want to use at a later date.
Now my list is significantly smaller I will use the statistics and logic to finalise my list: Keywords with the word buy in mean that my customers are ready to buy and a sale is more likely so I will assign them prority 1 Keywords with the word dog in will further target my traffic so I will assign them priority 2 All other keywords will be assigned priority 3
| 4. Mapping Your Keywords To Your Web PagesNow you have your final keywords/phrases you can now map them to the most relevent page on your website. You may find it easier to create a new column within your excel file and list each page of your site that you want indexed.
Remember: Keywords need to be highly relevent to the page you are mapping them too, if the keyword does not appear on the page you are mapping it too then you will need to be prepared to write it into the text - you can read more about this in step four. | |
